World Champions second in World Rankings, Argentina top

The World Champions are no longer top of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings. Argentina, Germany’s opponent in the final, have bumped Joachim Löw’s team down into second place in July’s edition of the table.

The Albiceleste have benefited from their run to the final of the Copa América, where Messi and co ultimately lost to Chile. Die Mannschaft, on 1411 points, only played the one Euro qualifier against Gibraltar (7-0) during Argentina’s (1473) participation in the Copa, and so Germany couldn’t gather enough points to defend top spot. The runners-up at the World Cup are top of the rankings for the first time in seven years.

The newly crowned champions of South America, Chile, moved up eight places in the rankings to eleventh position, just missing out on the top ten. New entries in the top ten include Romania (eighth, up four places), England (ninth, up six) and Wales, who made a big leap up the table after they beat Belgium in their Euro qualifier, moving up twelve places into tenth.

On one hand, the changes to the rankings can be attributed to the many new games that were played last month. 26 games at the Copa América, 99 qualifiers for the World Cup and continental tournaments, and 88 friendly matches have almost doubled the number of matches played this year (477). On the other hand, the matches from last year’s World Cup have been devalued. The next World Rankings will be released on 6th august 2015.
