World Champions remain third

Germany remain in third place in FIFA’s latest world rankings. With 1248 points, the World Champions remain 194 points behind World Cup runners-up Argentina, who have maintained their place at the top. Belgium are a mere 21 points ahead of Joachim Löw’s team in second.

Behind the top trio, there is a historical change in top ten for September’s rankings – England have fallen two places from eighth to tenth. This means that for the first time in history, Wales, who remain in ninth, are above England in the rankings and so can claim to be the best team from Great Britain.

Chile continue their rise

Chile have continued their rise within the top ten after their summer triumph in the Copa America on home soil. Arturo Vidal’s team now sit in eighth, their best position since 2006, after previously being in tenth position last month following their Copa win.

Germany’s position ahead of their EURO qualifiers against Poland and Scotland is a result of the devaluation of results from the summer of 2014. The devaluation of points from Germany’s 7-1 semi-final win over Brazil and the 1-0 win over Argentina in the World Cup final have alone cost the team 185 points this month.

Germany’s next opponents in their EURO qualifiers are on paper the strongest. Poland are now ranked 34th in the world, three places behind Scotland. Of Germany’s other group rivals, Ireland dropped down one place and out of the world’s top 50. Georgia now sit 147th, whilst Gibraltar do not appear in the ranking because they are not yet FIFA members.
