World champions are July's "Athletes of the Month"

Germany’s World Cup winning football team have been named Athletes of the Month for July by the 3800 athletes supported by Deutsche Sporthilfe (German Sports Aid Foundation). Coach Joachim Löw’s side garnered 44.6 per cent of the vote after becoming world champions for the fourth time with a 1-0 extra-time win against Argentina in Rio de Janeiro on 13 July.

Germany’s sabre fencing team, consisting of Nicolas Limbach, Maximilian Hartung, Matyas Szabo and Benedikt Wagner, came second in the poll at 30.9 per cent after winning a sensational gold medal at the Fencing World Championships in Kazan, Russia. Third place went to cyclist Marcel Kittel for his four stage wins at this year’s Tour de France.
