World Champion Müller leads the way into the last 16 for Bayern

Clear outcome in the highlight fixture the DFB Cup second round: record champions Bayern München progressed after a convincing 3-1 win over last season’s winners VfL Wolfsburg. SpVgg Unterhaching cause the main upset of the day, beating second division side RB Leipzig 3-0 at home. VfL Bochum emerged 1-0 winners from a close tie against fellow second division outfit Kaiserslautern, whilst newly promoted side led twice as they beat Hannover 96 2-1.

Thomas Müller makes the difference

It was the game everyone was looking forward to - cup holders Wolfsburg against Bayern München – and it had the makings of a classic. The guests from Munich demonstrated just why they were favourites, sealing another win after their 1000th Bundesliga win at the weekend. Douglas Costa fired FCB into the lead with a cracking shot from long range after just 15 minutes, before World Cup winner Thomas Müller added a brace shortly afterwards to give his side a 3-0 lead at half time.

Pep Guardiola’s side took their foot off the gas in the second half, but still coasted their way into the round of 16. VfL tried their best, but were unable to penetrate the Bayern defence, though André Schürrle managed to grab a consolation goal for his side in the 90th minute.

Unterhaching get the next surprise result, beating RB Leipzig 3-0

After Erzgebirge Aue, Unterhaching were the next team to pull off a surprise result. The Regionalliga team pulled off a surprise result against 2. Bundesliga side RB Leipzig to become the first regional league side to make it to this year’s quarter final.

It took just five minutes for Unterhaching to take the lead, and by half time, they had doubled their lead. After the break, U21 player David Selke came on and put pressure on the home side, but Unterhaching showed passion and spirit, and fought until the end. Unterhaching even had opportunities to make it three, but were elated with the win just as it was.

Darmstadt see off Hannover

Finally back in the last 16! Darmstadt 98 progressed to the round of 16 for the first time in 14 years thanks to Sandro Wagner on Tuesday night. Wagner chested in the winner in the 79th minute. The Lower Saxony side go out in the second round for the third consecutive year. Aytac Sulu had taken the lead shortly before Wagner’s winner, but Artur Sobiech had managed to find an initial equaliser in between.

In all honesty, neither side really deserved the win and the 15,900 fans at the Stadion am Böllenfalltor had to watch a fairly uneventful match for most of the first 70 minutes.

Own goal hands Bochum victory

VfL Bochum deservedly progressed to the third round of the DFB Cup for the first time in three years, even if the winning goal was a Chris Löwe own goal.

Kaiserslautern, who made it to the round of 16 last season, did very little to seal their passage to the next round, as they lined up with clear and predictable tactics: park the bus and hope. Conversely, their opponents Bochum enjoyed 75% possession, without really causing any danger. Despite that, however, the second-half own goal gave Bochum a more than deserved win.
