World Champion Lahm: “Can I continue at this level?”

Philipp Lahm celebrates his 33rd birthday today, with the World Champion giving more and more thought to a possible retirement in the summer of 2017. “I wouldn’t be able to give you a percentage,” explained the FC Bayern München captain, in response to a question asking about the probability of him retiring next summer. Lahm, who retired from the Germany national team after winning the World Cup in 2014, remains under contract with the record German champions until 2018. It is possible, however, that he calls time on his career a year early and moves upstairs into the boardroom of the reigning Bundesliga champions.

”I am now 33 years old and you always have to ask yourself the question: Can I continue at this level?” explained the Bayern captain. “And I’m not talking about months or years, but weeks.” It’s for this reason that Lahm is “not ruling anything out”. There are still 19 month to run on his current contract and so he says he will reflect on his situation month by month to see what level he can still play at.

“BVB are our toughest opponents”

Looking back on the season so far, the FCB captain has emphasized that his team are on the right track in all competitions. He describes Borussia Dortmund, who Bayern face next after the international break, as their “toughest opponents”, stating they have an “excellent team”. He says that the clash, which will take place on the 19th of November (18:30 CET), will be an “extremely difficult challenge” against an “extremely tough opponent.”

Lahm also acknowledges the good work done by promoted side RB Leipzig, who currently occupy second place in the Bundesliga: “Leipzig have momentum and until now have used it well. They’ve earned their points and therefore deserve to be so far up the table. They have the squad, the quality and the structure in their club. We’ll see how close they’ll come after 34 matchdays.”
