Women’s U19 EURO: Germany lose to Spain

The Germany women’s U19s were defeated in their first match of the European Championship in Slovakia. Maren Meinert’s side lost 1-0 to a strong Spain team in their crunch encounter.

Meanwhile, Switzerland won 4-0 against Austria to take top spot in Group B at the conclusion of the first matchday. Germany will face Switzerland in their second group game on Friday (18:00 CEST) and will then lock horns with Austria on Monday (18:00 CEST). The top two teams in the group phase will qualify for the semi-finals which will take place on 28th July. The final will be played on 31st July in Senec.

Meinert: “Not a bad performance from my team.”

“It was an open game and both teams had chances to win it,” said Meinert: “Spain’s win was not undeserved because of the second half as they were fitter than us. However, it was not a bad performance from my team.” The coach looked ahead to the Switzerland game: “We will have to recover well now and see whether the team can go again.”

Meinert was forced to make a change as early as the eleventh minute as Lisa Karl (SC Freiburg) went down injured and had to be replaced by Isabella Möller (1. FFC Frankfurt). The substitution did not curb the game’s early intensity though. Both teams were highly focused on defending and chances were at a premium. Playmaker Michaela Specht (1899 Hoffenheim) was replaced by Melissa Friedrich (Bayer Leverkusen) after the restart. The 2004 European Champions, Spain, were stronger and pushed the Germans back into their own half throughout the second period and they eventually took the lead through Nahikari Garcia in the 62nd minute after an assist from Andrea Sanchez.

Sanders without luck up front

Meinert reacted by introducing Stefanie Sanders up front with her Bremen team mate Pia-Sophie Wolter making way. The DFB women couldn’t make use of any of the chances they created in the closing stages and were unable to turn the match in their favour.

The Netherlands, 2014 European Champions, started with an emphatic 6:0 victory over the hosts Slovakia. Norway won the other Group A match 1-0 against three-time title winners France.
