Women’s footballer of the year: Sasic and Angerer nominated

Nadine Angerer and Celia Sasic, who both recently retired from international football, have been nominated for women’s world footballer of the year. The 10 player strong shortlist was released by FIFA on Monday. Angerer, who won the award in 2013, has just completed the season with the Portland Thorns in the USA.

Carli Lloyd is favourite to take the crown off Nadine Keßler, who has been injured for more than a year. Lloyd led the USA to World Cup triumph after scoring a hat trick in the final against Japan (5-2), and was voted best player of the tournament. The former 1. FFC Frankfurt player Sasic won the Golden Boot at the tournament (6 goals), and was crowned European footballer of the year in August.

Thomas Wörle of Bayern München and Colin Bell of 1. FFC Frankfurt will both be hoping to pick up the award of the world’s best coach in women’s football. The men’s shortlist will be released on Tuesday. The top 3 of all categories will be made known on the 30th November, and the top prizes handed out on the 11th January 2016 in Zurich.
