Women face off against Sweden in last 16

The Germany Women’s team will take on Sweden in the round of 16 phase at the World Cup in Canada. Last night’s conclusion of the group stage revealed Germany’s knockout round opponents.

“Sweden have a lot of quality on their team. The games we have played against them have always been competitive and close-fought,” said coach Silvia Neid. “As of now, we have to show passion and give everything. The team in better form on the day will go through to the quarterfinals.”

Sweden clinch the last third-place qualifying spot

Sweden's three points were enough to secure them the last third-place qualifying spot and a place in the round of 16. The bronze medallists from the 2011 World Cup benefited from the fact that Group F's Colombia were the only side to secure a better third-place finish than them on Wednesday night.

The final matchday of the group stage saw the top two spots in Group F go to France and England. Meanwhile in Group E, South Korea claimed their ticket for the last 16 after finishing behind group winners Brazil. As a result, Mexico, Costa Rica and Spain were all eliminated from the tournament.

France’s 5-0 win over Mexico meant that they were level on points with England, after the Three Lionesses defeated Colombia 2-1. An early Karen Carney goal and a Fara Williams penalty were enough to secure a spot in the next round, despite a 94th minute goal from Lady Andrade.

A lightning fast goal from Marie Laure Delie after 34 seconds got France off to a dream start in Ottawa. An own goal from Jennifer Ruiz and a brace from Eugenie Le Sommer gave the French side a convincing 4-0 lead at half time. Amandine Henry put the icing on the cake in the 80th minute.

South Korea eliminate Spain

Elsewhere, Brazil beat Costa Rica 1-0, thus ending the round of 16 dream for the Central American nation. An 83rd-minute goal from Raquel Fernandes made the the difference in Moncton as Brazil also won their third game of the group stage. In the other Group E game, South Korea defeated Spain 2-1 to nail down a place in the their knockout stages.

A 29th-minute strike from Bayern München-bound midfielder Vero Boquete had given Spain the lead, but second-half goals from Cho So-Hyun and Kim Soo-Yun gave South Korea the three points.
