Wolfsburg's record defence hardly surmountable

Attacks win games, defences win championships. And this ‘football principle’ has proved to be true in the Allianz Women’s Bundesliga to date. Defending Champions League and Bundesliga champions VfL Wolfsburg (35 points) and still undefeated FC Bayern München (33) have the best defences in the league and occupy the top two places after 13 of 22 matchdays.

The Wolves have shipped just one goal with that tally four for FCB. A team has not conceded fewer than ten goals since the introduction of the single Bundesliga in the 1997/98 season. It doesn't look bad for Wolfsburg and Munchen.

DFB Cup winners 1. FFC Frankfurt (28) have the best attack after netting 44 goals but are significantly off the Champions League spots in fourth place. 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam (31) are third and complete the top four. SGS Essen (17) are a long way adrift already.

Newly-promoted and now bottom side Herforder SV Borussia (2 points) have to look at an eight-point gap to safety over the winter break. MSV Duisburg (7) also occupy one of the relegation spots over the new year. The other newly-promoted team SC Sand (10) are outside the relegation zone at present though.

Frankfurt goal machines

Frankfurt prolific: Reigning DFB Cup Winners 1. FFC Frankfurt are the only team to break the 40-goal barrier after netting 44 goals. FC Bayern München (39) have narrowly missed out on this feat. 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam (35) and VfL Wolfsburg (34) are the only other side to bag more than 30 goals. All other teams have scored fewer than 20 goals. MSV Duisburg (8) and bottom club Herforder SV (13) have found the net the least.

Record goalkeeper: Goalkeeper Almuth Schult from league-leaders VfL Wolfsburg set several records in the final game before the winter break in the 3-0 victory of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. The 23-year-old Germany international kept her seventh straight clean sheet. No other keeper has ever managed to do so. She has now gone 704 minutes without conceding – a new record. The last goal that the Wolves let in has been the only on – in the 2-1 win of Turbine Potsdam on matchday 6. With the exception of FC Bayern München (4), all other sides have shipped 11 goals (1. FFC Frankfurt) or more. Newly-promoted Herforder SV (52) and SC Freiburg (35) have the leakiest defences.

Celia Sasic averages a goal a game

Sasic’s dozen: Over a goal a game on average. Germany internatonal Celia Sasic of 1. FFC Frankfurt has racked up this feat. The 26-year-old has bagged 12 goals in eleven appearances, putting her top of the scoring charts. No other player is to get into double-figures. Sasic netted four in the 7-0 victory of SC Freiburg alone and scored a hat-trick in the 6-1 win against Herford. Sasic’s teammate Kerstin Garefrekes has scored nine goals in 13 league outings, with Martina Müller from VfL Wolfsburg netting eight in as many matches.

Wolves are impolite guests: Who would like to have the Wolves over? The six Bundesliga sides that have played host to VfL Wolfsburg have all thought this season. The Wolves have won all six of their games on the road with a goal record of 20:0. Other sides strong on their travels include FC Bayern München (17 pts from 7 games) and 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam (16 pts from 7 matches). Newly-promoted Herforder SV (1 point) and SC Sand (3) have had little joy on away soil this term. The German champions from Wolfsburg also top the home table (17). But the sides below them in Bayern München (16), Potsdam and 1. FFC Frankfurt (15 each) each have played a game fewer on home soil. MSV Duisburg (2) and Herforder SV) are still awaiting their first home win.

Many permanent fixtures at 1899 Hoffenheim

No change for Hoffenheim: Sixth-placed side 1899 Hoffenheim are one of the teams that have rarely rotated. They have three players yet to miss a minute in the form of Kristin Demann, Tamara Dongus and Martina Moser. The top teams also have two ‘permanent fixtures’ in their sides. Caroline Abbe, Melanie Behringer and Nora Holstad have been ever presents in the FC Bayern München, while goalkeeper Almuth Schult, Nilla Fischer and Babett Peter are yet to miss a minute for VfL Wolfsburg. 21 players have played 100% of their teams’ minutes until the winter break.

High wins: 1. FFC Frankfurt and FC Bayern München have both been hungry for goals this term. FCB have won 7-0 against Herforder SV with Frankfurt victorious of SC Freiburg with the same scoreline. Interesting: FC Bayern and FFC both managed 6-0 victories against MSV Duisburg. VfL Wolfsburg have had the heaviest away win after they won 7-0 in Herford. The goal with the most games as the 7-1 win from Frankfurt in Hoffenheim. The most common scorelines were 3-0 and 2-1 (ten each).

Goalless draw hard to come by

Goals guaranteed: The probability of watching a goalless draw in one of the 78 games in the Allianz Women’s Bundesliga up until now was very low. Only five games finished in a goalless stalemate. There have been a total of 265 goals, equating to an average of 3.4 goals per game. Last season it was 3.95 goals per game. The average attendance has also sunk. 1185 viewed the action on average last term but that figure is just 926 this season so far. At the same point of last season, the average attendance was 1169 spectators on average.

One manager change: There has only been one managerial change to report in the first half of the season. Newly-promoted SC Sand replaced Nikolaus Koutroubis with Sven Kajlert shortly before the end of the year. Kahlert, who has managed 1. FFC Frankfurt and MSV Dusiburg amongst others, got off to a good start with a 4-2 win against bottom side Herforder SV.
