Wolfsburg's Blässe: "Frankfurt want to get back at us"

It promises to be one of the most important games in the Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga. When VfL Wolfsburg face 1. FFC Frankfurt on Sunday (11:30 CET), it’s more than just a normal game. Second face third; the two title favourites meet.

Wolfsburg attacker Anna Blässe spoke to DFB.de about the upcoming match, The 27-year-old has been at VfL since 2007 and ist he third longest serving player after Martina Müller and Maren Tetzlaff. She also recently extended her contract with the Wolves until 2017.

DFB.de: Ms. Blässe, what are your thoughts ahead of the game?

Anna Blässe: We are full of confidence but it is worth remembering that we are facing a very strong side. Frankfurt will want to get back at us. They certainly won’t have forgotten that we snatched the title away from them by beating them in the final game of last season. It’s important that we don’t lose; I’m sure that it’s going to be a tough game.

DFB.de: What memories do you have of that game? And how are you feeling?

Blässe: We look back at it fondly. We won 2-1 and claimed the title – Frankfurt only needed a draw. Games against FFC are always special. I certainly can tell you what I’m not feeling: scared. We are excited but also respectful of our opponents. Games like this are the high point of your season.

DFB.de: Is it a clash between the two best teams in Germany?

Blässe: I wouldn’t say so because at the minute FC Bayern München top the table; we’re second. Frankfurt are third. It’s a tight league this season – you also can’t rule out Turbine Potsdam. The Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga has possibly not been this tight and strong before. I think that the four teams I mentioned are going to be fighting for the title right up until the end.

DFB.de: You arrived at Wolfsburg in 2007 – what do you make of the development of the club?

Blässe: Martina Müller and Maren Tetzlaff are the only players who have been here longer than me. When I arrived from Hamburger SV in 2007 everything was quite professional already. But you can’t compare it to the club today: It’s incredible how far the club has developed on and off the field in such a short space of time. VfL Wolfsburg are one of the biggest names in global women’s football.

DFB.de: Are you proud of the fact that you are still at the club?

Blässe: Of course. New players have arrived at the club but our manager (Ralf Kellermann) has continually showed faith in me. I have always given my all to the team. I feel lucky to have been part of this development. It shows that I have also developed.

DFB.de: You recently extended your deal until 2017. That would mean ten years at the club…

Blässe: I don’t see any reasons to move on. I feel perfectly at home here. Everything is great on and off the field. I didn’t have to think about extending my contract here: I look forward to everything. It’s great to play with some of the best players in the world daily. Why would I want to move on?

DFB.de: The past two years have been brilliant...

Blässe: Of course: We’ve won the Bundesliga twice, the Champions League twice and the DFB Cup once. If you told me that this would happen in 2007, I would have thought you were crazy. But we’re still not satisfied; we want more. Therefore, the game against Frankfurt is extremely important to us.
