Wolfsburg unable to pull off miracle, Gomez fires Fiorentina through

VfL Wolfsburg fought back from 2-0 down in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final with SSC Napoli to come away with a 2-2 draw on the night. However, the second placed side in the Bundesliga were knocked out after their 4-1 defeat in the first leg last week.

“It’s not what we had planned. But it shows the character of the team that we didn’t give up at 2-0 down,” said Wolfsburg left back Marcel Schäfer. In front of 30,000 at the San Paolo stadium, Jose Calléjon (50’) and Dries Mertens (65’) fired Napoli in front before centre back Timm Klose (71’) and Ivan Perisic (73’) pulled it back for VfL.

Mario Gomez has left AC Fiorentina dreaming of their third European title in the club’s history. The Germany striker scored the opener in the Italian side’s 2-0 second leg win over Ukrainian side Dynamo Kiev, which sees the club advance to their first semi-final in Europe since the 2007/2008 season. Seven years ago, Fiorentina went on to be knocked out of the UEFA Cup by Glasgow Rangers.

29-year-old Gomez started the game and fired Fiorentina in front just before half time (43’) at the Stadio Artemio Franchi. Juan Vargas then put the result beyond doubt just before the final whistle (90+4). Fiorentina will find out their opponents in the semi-final on Friday when the draw takes place in Nyon, Switzerland. Along with Fiorentina and Napoli will be defending champions Sevilla FC and Dnipro.
