Wolfsburg through to quarterfinal

DFB Cup winners VfL Wolfsburg have reached the quarterfinal stage of the Women’s Champions League. After a 2-1 away win last week, the champions from 2013 and 2014 confirmed their place after beating FC Chelsea 2-0.

Vanessa Bernauer (12’) scored the opening goal for VfL in front of 1632 spectators in the AOK stadium against the champions of England. Chelsea defender Claire Rafferty then scored an own goal (68’).

Minute’s silence for the Paris victims

After a minute’s silence for the victims of the terrorist attack in Paris last week, Wolfsburg were on the front foot from early on, and pushed the London team deep into their own half. They got their reward through Swiss international Bernauer, who found the corner wit a volley from 25 metres out.

Ralf Kellermann’s side continued to push forward, but Chelsea defended well. DFB player Babett Peter was close to finding the back of the net in the 28th minute / the best chance ahead of the break.

In the second period, Chelsea began to row into the game. Wolfsburg could not pass the ball around like they are used to, and allowed their opponents more opportunities. The best fell to Eniola Aluko (53’), who could only hit the bar.

The passing up of opportunities would come back to haunt the guests. The first attack of meaning for the hosts in the second half, Popp hit the post with a shot and Rafferty put the ball in her own net to make it 2-0.

The draw for the next round takes place on the 10th December in the UEFA headquarters in Nyon. The games will take place on the 23/24th March and 30/31st March next year.
