Wolfsburg take step closer to Allianz-Frauen Bundesliga title

Absolute screamer in title race: Reigning champions VfL Wolfsburg have extended their lead in the Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga. The two-time Bundesliga champions thrashed already relegated Herforder SV 10-0. The result also boosts their goal difference.

VfL now have 51 points and have a four-point cushion over chasers Bayern München with just two matchdays left to play. 1. FFC Frankfurt, currently in third place with 46 points, face SC Freiburg later today (17:00 CEST) and have the chance to overtake Bayern and close the gap on the leaders. Both Wolfsburg (Saturday, 18:00 CEST against PSG) and Frankfurt (Sunday, 14:00 CEST against Bröndy IF) play in the Champions League semi-finals this weekend.

Popp, Hansen, Kerschowski and Ogimi bag braces

Caroline Hansen started the goal-fest at the AOK Stadion in the 10th minute, before Yuki Ogimi doubled Wolfsburg’s advantage just moments later. The team scored another 5 goals before the break, courtesy of a brace from Germany international Alexandra Popp, U 20 World Champion Lina Magull, another from Hansen and Isabel Kerschowski. Wolfsburg stepped it down a gear in the second half but still managed to take their tally to double figures, thanks to goals from Julia Simic, Kerschowski once again and Ogimi.

Wolfsburg travel to SGS Essen next Wednesday before finishing the season against 1. FFC Frankfurt on the 10th May. FFC will pit themselves against 1899 Hoffenheim in a week’s time. FC Bayern’s end of season run-in sees them come up against FF USV Jena on Sunday (12:00 CEST), then Herford and finally SGS Essen.
