VfL Wolfsburg ensured they will play Bundesliga football next season after completing a two-legged relegation play-off win over Eintracht Braunschweig on Monday night.
Four days after Mario Gomez’s penalty gave the Wolves a 1-0 win in their home leg, the same scoreline was enough to complete the job in Braunschweig after a stunning strike from Vierinha early in the second half settled the tie in favour of Andreas Jonker’s side.
Bundesliga 2 team Eintracht, who finished third in the regular season, had the better opportunities in the first half but were left to rue not finding the back of the net when Vierinha fired a left-footed strike into the top corner just after the restart.
The away goal rules left the home side requiring three goals in the final forty minutes - a difficult task and one which became impossible when right back Maximilian Sauer was sent off late on.
