Wolfsburg go out as Ronaldo inspires Real comeback

VfL Wolfsburg failed to achieve the incredible and ended up going out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage to Real Madrid, who featured World Cup winner Toni Kroos. Last year's Bundesliga runners-up went into the return leg with a 2-0 lead but suffered a 3-0 defeat in the Spanish capital, losing 3-2 on aggregate.

Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals within the space of 86 seconds to put his side 2-0 up inside 17 minutes. He then scored from a direct free kick with less than a quarter of an hour to play to knock out the brave Wolfsburg team.

Wolfsburg have now missed out on their theoretical chance of qualifying for next year's competition by winning the Champions League this season, with their Bundesliga position suggesting it is unlikely they will qualify by finishing in the top four. Real, by contrast, have made the semi-finals for the sixth year in a row thanks to a superb comeback.

Draxler off injured

Wolfsburg were not helped by an injury to midfielder Julian Draxler, who had been so impressive in the Wolves' stunning 2-0 home win last Wednesday. The World Cup winner was replaced after just half an hour by Max Kruse.

Trapp and PSG also go out

Kevin Trapp's dream of winning the Champions League is over for this year. The Germany international and French champions PSG lost 1-0 away to Manchester City in the second leg of their quarter-final clash, going out at this stage for the fourth year in a row.

As in last week's 2-2 draw in the French capital, PSG were disappointing from the start and posed little attacking threat. Former Wolfsburg player Kevin De Bruyne scored the game's only goal on 76 minutes with a fine strike from outside the area.

City in semi-finals for the first time

For Manchester City, the club current Bayern coach Pep Guardiola will take charge of in the summer, reaching the semi-finals represents the best achievement in the club's European history. Sergio Aguero had the chance to settle the hosts' nerves a little earlier on when he was fouled by Trapp and City were awarded a penalty. However, he put his spot-kick wide of the target and let the French side off the hook.

53,903 fans watched two sides battle hard until Kevin De Bruyne showed a wonderful piece of skill and an even better finish to put Manchester City in the lead on the night and all but seal their passage through to the final four. The line-up for the Champions League semi-finals will be completed tomorrow with FC Bayern München travelling to Lisbon to face SL Benfica and FC Barcelona welcoming Atletico Madrid to the Camp Nou.
