Wolfsburg and Frankfurt both win as title race hots up

Defending champions VfL Wolfsburg and 1. FFC Frankfurt justified their roles as favourites going into their respective games on matchday 21 in the Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga as both took all three points in their quests for the title. Following the disappointing 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final, Wolfsburg reacted well and secured a comfortable 4-0 victory over SGS Essen.

Chasers Frankfurt built upon their current good run of results, recording a convincing 4-0 victory over visitors 1899 Hoffenheim. It was another dominant performance following the team’s 7-0 win against Bröndby IF in the Champions League semi-final first leg last Sunday.

Wolfsburg remain at the top

Ralf Kellermann’s side remain on course to retain their title courtesy of the victory. Wolfsburg are top of the table with 54 points and have winning the title in their own hands. Frankfurt, now with 52 points, climbed up to second in the table and remain hot on the heels of the current leaders. Bayern München have the chance to reclaim second place at the weekend should they beat Herford.

Wolfsburg were strong right from the off at the Stadion Essen. Von der Niederlage am letzten Samstag gegen Paris war den Spielerinnen nichts mehr anzumerken. VfL were determined to come away with a result against the fifth-placed team and played with real ambition. Vanessa Bernauer set the guests on their way to victory, opening the scoring after only five minutes. Essen sat deep in the first half, allowing Wolfsburg to control and dictate the game. Martina Müller, Caroline Hansen and Bernauer all spurned good chances to double the advantage before the break.

Brace for Popp

Despite SGS Essen starting the second half brightly and putting VfL under pressure for a short period, the guests seemed unfazed and quickly added to their tally. Germany international Alexandra Popp grabbed the second goal in the 54th minute before scoring her second of the game ten minutes later, getting on the end of a free-kick to head home. This spurred the visitors on with Yūki Ōgimi hitting the back of the net only three minutes later to make it 4-0.

Sasic and Marozsán score for Frankfurt

Colin Bell’s team put in a top-drawer performance at home to 1899 Hoffenheim on Wednesday evening to secure all three points and keep their title hopes alive. Following on from previous victories in the Champions League and the Bundesliga, Frankfurt continued to adopt a real attacking style of play.
