Winning the championship in style: a 27th title for FC Bayern

FC Bayern München raised their fifth consecutive league title and their 27th overall on Saturday afternoon, in Matchday 31 of the Bundesliga. The German record champions handed VfL Wolfsburg an emphatic defeat in a game which finished 6-0 over the relegation-threatened side, thereby winning the title with three games left to play. The circumstances benefited them thanks to second-placed RB Leipzig’s 0-0 draw against FC Ingolstadt earlier in the afternoon, which meant that the gap between them and FC Bayern grew to ten points.

David Alaba opened the scoring through a direct free-kick 19 minutes in, before the clinical Robert Lewandowski extended his side’s lead with a brace (36’, 45’) prior to the whistle for half-time being blown. The Polish striker now has 28 Bundesliga goals to his name this season – good enough to overtake Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (27) as the league’s leading scorer. Aubameyang was held without a goal in BVB’s goalless draw with 1. FC Köln earlier in the afternoon. Arjen Robben's 66th minute goal was followed up by goals from world champion Thomas Müller (80’) and Joshua Kimmich (85’).

Wolfsburg’s counter-attack tactics come to nothing

Bayern started out on the offensive. The VfL defense managed to avoid going behind in the sixth minute, and things looked promising for them at the other end of the field for the side who were desperate to prevent any form of title celebrations from happening in front of their 30,000 fans in a sold out Arena. Germany international Mario Gomez had the first chance for his side against his former employers in the eighth minute.

FCB quickly took over the midfield battle, as Andries Jonker’s team opted to attack on the counter, and indeed Wolfsburg looked threatening even after the Alaba goal. Lewandowski and Müller were denied further goals thanks to a fantastic double-save by Koen Casteels, who was in net for Wolfsburg (21’, 22’).

Müller and Kimmich round off the rout

Wolfsburg kept the scoreline as it was for a while, but ultimately the guests put any chance of a come-back out of sight for their hosts through Lewandowski, who punished them for allowing giving him too much time in the box on both occasions.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti’s side were hungry for more goals after the break, with Alaba hitting the woodwork in the 48th minute. Robben beat Casteels at his near post in the 66th minute, before Wolfsburg captain Luiz Gustavo received a second yellow to make matters worse for VfL. Müller and Kimmich rounded off the rout with goals in the last 10 minutes of the game.
