Winning run ends for Kroos and Real

Spain’s record champions Real Madrid dropped points on matchday 5 in LaLiga and passed up on the chance to set a record of 17 consecutive wins. World Cup winner Toni Kroos started for Los Blancos as they drew 1-1 with Villarreal.

Bruno Soriano had put the guests in front from the penalty spot deep into added time in the first half, before Sergio Ramos headed Real level minutes after the restart. The result halted a run of 16 consecutive wins, leaving them tied for the record with arch-rivals FC Barcelona. Despite dropping points, Real remain top of the table with 13 points from their opening five matches.

Big wins for Juventus and Roma

With Sami Khedira rested, the Italian champions reclaimed top spot in Serie A on Wednesday evening. Massimiliano Allegri’s side ran out 4-0 winners against Cagliari, putting them back to the top of the league ahead of Napoli who could only manage a 0-0 draw at Genoa.

Daniele Rugani, Gonzalo Higuaín, Dani Alves and an own goal from Luca Ceppitelli helped Juventus to the three points on the night. Khedira was rested by Allegri following a busy run of fixtures in recent weeks.

After losing 1-0 to Fiorentina at the weekend, Roma got back to winning ways with an impressive 4-0 win over Crotone. The win takes the title-hopefuls to third in the table, just two points off the league leaders from Turin.

Stephan El Shaarawy and Mohamed Salah put Roma in front in the first half, before a brace from ex--Wolfsburg forward Edin Dzeko ensured all three points stayed in the Italian capital. Germany international Antonio Rüdiger is still recovering from an injury sustained in the build-up to EURO 2016.

Man City and Sané win

England’s crisis-hit record champions Manchester United avoided another humiliating evening, but did not cover themselves in glory in their League Cup encounter. José Mourinho’s star-studded outfit stumbled to a 3-1 victory in their third-round match against newly promoted third-tier club Northampton Town. World champion Bastian Schweinsteiger was once again not included in the Red Devils’ squad.

Local rivals Manchester City also laboured on their way to reaching the tournament’s last 16. Germany international Leroy Sané was in the starting eleven as the Premier League leaders defeated fellow Premier League club Swansea City 2-1. Ilkay Gündogan was rested and did not feature.
