Win semi-final against England for place in final and World Cup

The minimum target has been achieved but there is still a way to go yet. The Germany women’s U17 will face off against England in the semi-final on the European Championship in Serbia tonight (18:00 CEST). If the U17s can win at the Torpedo-Stadion in Zhodzina, they will not only secure themselves a place in the final but will also qualify for the U17 Women’s World Cup in Jordan (30th September to 21st October). Spain will take on Norway in today’s second semi-final (13:00 CEST).

England finished the group stage without dropping any points. “It will be an extremely intense match between two equal sides,” thinks DFB coach Anouschka Bernhard, who added, “We know the England women and their physical presence. We played against them in December and know that they have a number of talented footballers in their ranks.” At the end of last year, the Germany youth team secured a 1-0 voctory in an unofficial friendly against England.

Ziegler: “We have to be strong”

The teams faced off in the U17 European Championship in Ireland in 2015, when the DFB-team won 5-0 in the third group match. Some players from that team are still in the current squad, such as Janina Minge and Tanja Pawollek. That will not count for anything today though. “The English players are very athletic and we will have to be strong and tackle hard,” said midfielder Vanessa Ziegler, who scored twice in the 4-0 win over Czech Republic in the group stages.

The U17s have showed themselves to be on top form. If they can put in a similar performance to last time out or improve on it then progressing to the final is definitely a possibility. If the team fails to secure a place in the final of the European Championship, they will still have the opportunity to qualify for the World Cup by winning the third place play-off. Bernhard and Co. would obviously prefer to win today and check World Cup qualification off their list though.
