Werner dazzles with goal and assist in Leipzig win

Confederations Cup winner Timo Werner dazzled with a goal and an assist after coming on as a substitute in RB Leipzig’s 3-1 victory over FC Schalke 04. Werner didn’t start due to a bout of the flu, but quickly made his presence felt in the game when he came on in the 63rd minute.

He started by smashing home from very close range, after a stellar piece of build-up play from Konrad Laimer left the Germany international unmarked in front of an open goal (63’). He wasn’t done there though, as he provided an assist for Bruma’s goal less than ten minutes later (71’). Before the introduction of Werner, Naby Keita’s opener in the first half (41’) was cancelled out by a well-placed Naldo header (55’).

Werner now has nine goals and three assists this season, as RB Leipzig (31 points) now climb above Schalke (29 points) into second place. Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich are out in front with 44 points.
