Wellenreuther in U20 squad for Poland and Czech Republic games

Frank Wormuth has announced the U20 squad for the upcoming games against Poland on the 27th March in Jena (14:00 CET) and the Czech Republic on the 31st March in Aue (18:30 CEST). Five uncapped players have been included in the 24-man squad.

Schalke goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther, who has been playing regularly in the Bundesliga and Champions League in place of the injured Ralf Fährmann, has been handed his first call-up. Defenders Robert Bauer, who plays for current second division table toppers FC Ingolstadt and VfL Wolfsburg’s Moritz Sprenger, along with 1899 Hoffenheim midfielder Grischa Prömel and Borussia Dortmund forward Jeremy Dudziak have also been included in the team for the first time.

The 24 players, a mixture of new and proven talents, will all be trying to impress in the build-up to the World Cup in New Zealand (30th May – 20th June). Kevin Akpoguma (1899 Hoffenheim), Fabian Holthaus (VfL Bochum), Marc-Oliver Kempf (SC Freiburg), Niklas Stark (1. FC Nürnberg), Hany Mukhtar (Benfica), Marc Stendera (Eintracht Frankfurt), Julian Brandt (Bayer Leverkusen) and Davie Selke (Werder Bremen) were all in the starting XI for the 1-0 victory over Portugal in the u19 2014 European Championship final in Hungary.

The u20 match against Poland forms part of a round-robin tournament, while the Czech Republic game is a friendly. There will be a training camp from the 19th – 22nd April, including the last round-robin tournament fixture against Italy (21st April, 15:00 CEST).

The u20 squad will travel to New Zealand for the World Cup at the end of May. They will face Fiji, Uzbekistan and Honduras in Christchurch in the group stages, with the matches taking place on the 1st (03:00 CEST), 4th (06:00 CEST) and 7th (04:00 CEST) June respectively.
