Weiser to thank as Hertha beat Schalke

Thanks to a standout performance from Germany U21 international Mitchell Weiser, Hertha BSC remain just behind Bayern in the Bundesliga table after matchday 3. The Berlin club ran out 2-0 winners at home to FC Schalke 04 on Sunday and, with three wins out of three so far this season, successfully defended second place and stayed on the same number of points as record champions FCB.

Mitchell Weiser (64’) not only scored but played a significant part in his side’s second and decisive goal, playing an inch-perfect pass to set up substitute Valentin Stocker (74’).

Schalke were unable to build upon their 1-0 victory over OGC Nice in the Europa League three days ago and, just as they did under Felix Magath six years, have started the season with three consecutive defeats. The Royal Blues therefore find themselves in the relegation zone.

Mainz claim first win

FSV Mainz 05 have finally picked up their first win of the season. In their 50th Bundesliga game under coach Martin Schmidt, the Europa League side earned a deserved 3-1 victory at FC Augsburg.

Jhon Cordoba's third goal in all competitions this season gave the visitors the lead after seven minutes. Konstantinos Stafylidis drew FCA level midway through the second half, but Yunus Malli and Yoshinori Muto were on target to secure the three points for FSV. In the closing stages of the game, José Rodriguez was given his marching orders on his Bundesliga debut, picking up a red card for a foul on Augsburg's Dominik Kohr.

26,115 spectators saw Mainz coach Schmidt make six changes to the team that drew 1-1 with St. Etienne in the Europa League on Thursday. Despite the many changes though, Mainz started brightly and immediately created problems for Augsburg's defence. Cordoba rewarded this solid start by heading home the opener from a Malli corner.

Mainz didn't look as determined at the start of the second half and this allowed Augsburg back into the game. FSV keeper Jonas Lössl made a fine save from Martin Hinteregger on the hour mark, before Stafylidis levelled with a crisp strike from distance. But Malli's response just two minutes later took the wind out of Augsburg's sails. Muto supplied the finishing touch as Mainz recorded a 3-1 victory in Augsburg.
