Wasteful BVB lose in Lisbon

Borussia Dortmund have suffered an unnecessary loss in their Champions League round of 16 first-leg match against Benfica, and will therefore have to turn the tie around at the Signal Iduna Park on the 8th of March. Striker Kostas Mitroglou provided the decisive goal for the Portuguese side in the 48th minute.

In comparison to their 2-1 away loss to Darmstadt at the weekend, BVB were much improved. However, Thomas Tuchel’s men were still shaky in defence when facing former Duisberg goal-getter Mitroglou and the adventurous ex-Gladbach full-back Nelson Semedo. Despite this, goalkeeper Roman Bürki had quite a quiet night until the break.

BVB create chance after chance

After a nervy opening period, the Bundesliga outfit took control of the game. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missed the game’s first golden opportunity after ten minutes. A little later, Ousmane Dembélé’s effort inside the six-yard box was blocked at the last moment.

With seven minutes to go before half time, Raphael Guerreiro almost set up Aubameyang with a ball into the box, but the Gabon striker failed to latch on to the ball. In the 40th minute, Benfica goalkeeper Ederson and Dembélé collided just inside the box, but Italian referee Nicola Rizzoli didn’t waved away penalty appeals.

Mitroglou pokes the ball home, Aubameyang misses from the spot

Tthe home team came out of the blocks better after half time and, with a little luck, took the lead. Mitroglou cleaned up after a the ball came loose from a corner (48’). BVB reacted well after going behind as Aubameyang struck the bar just four minutes later. Next, Ederson denied Marco Reus (55’) and the Lukas Piszczek. In the 58th minute, the referee pointed to the spot after a Benfica hand touched the ball inside the area, but yet again, Aubameyang couldn’t convert.

Dortmund continued to pile on the pressure but couldn’t find the equaliser, as Reus put the ball wide of the right post after a cross from Guerreiro (66’). In the final stages, it was evident it just wasn’t BVB night, as Ederson made a miraculous reflex save on substitute Christian Pulisic (84’).
