Volland's record-equalling goal in vain as Bayern win 2-1

A record-equalling goal from Germany international Kevin Volland was not enough for 1899 Hoffenheim on matchday two of the Bundesliga, as an equaliser from World Cup winner Thomas Müller and a late goal from Robert Lewandowski secured a 2-1 win for the Bavarian side. Another Germany international, Julian Draxler, scored the equaliser for FC Schalke 04 in a 1-1 home draw with promoted side Darmstadt 98.

Elsewhere, there were 1-1 draws for DFB Cup winners VfL Wolfsburg away at 1. FC Köln and for Eintracht Frankfurt against FC Augsburg. With a 1-0 win against Hannover 96, Bayer Leverkusen were the only team aside from Bayern to register a win today.

Volland scores after nine seconds, Lewandowski in the last minute

There had barely been time for the fans in Sinsheim to settle into their seats before the home supporters were up celebrating. Volland was presented with a goalscoring opportunity in the first few seconds of the match after a poor pass from David Alaba back to goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, equalling the record for the fastest ever Bundesliga goal, set last season by Leverkusen's Karim Bellarabi. Bayern recovered slowly from the early shock, equalising shortly before the break courtesy of Thomas Müller. However, Hoffenheim could have been celebrating a victory of their own after being awarded a second-half penalty for a handball against Jerome Boateng with the score tied at 1-1. Boateng was sent off for a second yellow card, but Eugen Polanski's penalty struck the post and stayed out. In the end, Hoffenheim were unable to make their numerical advantage count as substitute Robert Lewandowski netted a late winner for Bayern.

Darmstadt have once again been making waves in the Bundesliga, this time at the Veltins Arena. Konstantin Rausch curled them into the lead from the edge of the box just nine minutes into the match, but Julian Draxler levelled for Schalke almost immediately after the start of the second period.

Leverkusen maintain 100% record

1. FC Köln followed up their away win at Stuttgart last weekend with a draw against Wolfsburg. The hosts took the lead in the 30th minute as Simon Zoller latched onto a long ball from Germany U21 international goalkeeper Timo Horn, lobbed the ball over Wolfsburg goalkeeper Koen Casteels and headed into the empty net. Nicklas Bendtner took advantage of a rebound off Horn to equalise late on.

Bayer 04 have free-kick maestro Hakan Calhanoglu to thank for their success in Hannover, whose 18th-minute strike left Germany international goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler with no chance. Leverkusen and Bayern sit at the top of the tree as the only two teams with a 100% record.

Eintracht Frankfurt narrowly managed to avoid a second league defeat of the season after falling behind against Augsburg to a first-half goal from Caiuby. Marco Russ' 88th-minute strike meant that Eintracht at least left with a share of the points.
