Volland: "We fought and showed good character"

After every matchday, DFB.de gathers the thoughts of Germany youth and senior internationals. Today, after Bundesliga matchday 28, we have quotes from national goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, Julian Brandt and Julian Weigl amongst others.

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim 1-1 1. FC Köln

Kevin Volland: Above all else we played poorly in the first half. We fought hard and showed good character in the second period, even if we didn’t play the best football. It was clear to us that it would be really difficult against Köln because they are very good defensively and don’t give you any space. That is why I am happy we came away from the game with a 1-1. It feels good to get over the line again but we really haven’t gained anything yet. We have a tough challenge coming up against Frankfurt next Saturday. My father always says that I need to run through more. I did that today and got the luck we needed to score the equaliser.

Sebastian Rudy: It is good to be out of the relegation zone. We only really got a point but it is important for our mindset. Köln played very well defensively and that’s why we couldn’t find any gaps. We created one or two chances but didn’t make the most of them. Luckily we got a late equaliser to make it 1-1. Apparently a Köln player was down on the ground but I didn’t see that.

Jonas Hector: We have to obviously carry on and defend better. We need to take a look at ourselves. I don’t want to make a judgment on whether they should have put the ball out of play or not as that is something the players have to ask themselves.

Bayern München 1-0 Eintracht Frankfurt

Manuel Neuer: If you only score one goal you have to be tight at the back. The team put in a good defensive performance today.

Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 VfL Wolfsburg

Bernd Leno: We put in a convincing performance for 90 minutes. We had a really good balance. We were always dangerous going forward and didn’t let much past at the back even though Wolfsburg have a strong attack.

Julian Brandt: We played a very good game. I think we performed very well as a team today. Chicharito was outstanding. He only landed in Germany yesterday and came up with a goal and an assist. It just shows the amazing quality he possesses. Everything is going really well for me at the moment.

Julian Draxler: We played terribly today. We were second-best in almost every situation. Real Madrid will be a totally different match but it is also in a different competition. Today, our first task was to concentrate on Leverkusen. Things aren’t looking great for us at the moment but you can’t say that we must be doing better in the league. We have to improve a little bit and then we will end up where we want to be – right at the top.

Borussia Dortmund 3-2 Werder Bremen

Marco Reus: We took the lead in the first half and had the game under control until we conceded two very unnecessary goals which produced a thrilling end to the game. We have often turned games around late on this season, which is why we always remained calm. We got the equaliser and quickly added a third goal to secure the win.

Julian Weigl: The first goal we conceded was quite annoying. Diverted and after a set piece. But things like that can happen. All in all we defended well, even if we did concede the 2-1 straight away. That was a short, sharp shock. But we had the perfect reply. We actually controlled the game at all times. Even after we went behind I never had the feeling that we would lose. A win like this is really good for morale. Our many victories have given us a lot of belief in ourselves, we know that we are always good for a goal. The fact that two players came on to score, shows how strong our squad is in depth. We deserved to win against Werder Bremen.

Borussia Mönchengladbach 5–0 Hertha BSC

Patrick Herrmann: It was a huge performance from us. We proved that we have buckets of quality, especially in attack. We did almost everything right and the win is thoroughly deserved. It was a great day for all of us. I was particularly pleased to see André Hahn score after so long out on the sidelines. The three points are crucial as there was no way we could have afforded to lose today. We're taking things one game at a time and want to achieve the best league position we can.
