Volland: "The win will do us the world of good"

One goal, two assists and three points – Kevin Volland’s Saturday couldn’t have gone better. TSG Hoffenheim’s 3-1 win in Augsburg was hugely impressive. After the game, DFB.de spoke to the Germany international.

Question: Mr. Volland, how did you feel yesterday went for you personally?

Kevin Volland: I’d say it went well. It was great to score a brace and help the team. The win will do us the world of good as it will help boost our self-confidence ahead of the upcoming games.

Question: What has changed recently?

Volland: After the draw with Dortmund we knew that we were heading in the right direction. We took the lead early on in Augsburg but then the performance tailed off a bit and we were lucky not to find ourselves in a losing position. This sort of luck has been absent in recent weeks, so it’s good to finally get the rub of the green.

Question: Talk us through your goals...

Volland: We work on counterattacking a lot so the first goal was almost a typical strike. The defenders often try to make themselves big, which gives you the chance to play it through their legs whilst the keeper is still unsighted. Obviously, I still have to get the technique right, but it’s something that we work on. As for the penalty, I believe that if you fire it right into the corner not many keepers will stand a chance of keeping it out. Maybe Manuel Neuer still would though…

Question: You’ve picked up four points in the last two games. Do you think the team are finally at their best?

Volland: Yes, I’d like to think so. We made a few mistakes in the opening few games, we gave points away and didn’t perform to the best of our ability, but we also had our share of misfortune, for example against Darmstadt and to a point against Dortmund – we should really have closed that game out. We also should have claimed a point against Bremen but we let it slip away in injury time. Some of the new lads aren’t totally used to the Bundesliga yet, but we’re getting there. It was great to record a win but there is still some work to be done.

Question: Such as being more solid once you’ve taken the lead?

Volland: I guess so – but that’s also a psychological thing too. Half time was strange yesterday as we felt like we were losing even though it was 1-1. Previously a late blow like the one we suffered yesterday would have had a lasting impact, but we did well after the break and Augsburg didn’t create too many chances. We were clinical in front of goal, which turned out to be the deciding factor.
