Volland scores in Leverkusen’s 1-1 draw in Moscow

Bayer Leverkusen came away with a point against CSKA Moscow on matchday 5 of the Champions League, with Germany international Kevin Volland on target in the 1-1 draw. Should Tottenham Hotspur lose their game against AS Monacho this evening (20:45 CET), the Werkself will be through to the knockout stages.

In freezing temperatures, it was the Russian champions who had the first chance of the game. After a quick break from the home side, Bernd Leno got the ball just ahead of the fast-approaching Alexander Golowin(4’). Kevin Kampl picked up the ball at the edge of the box and crossed into a free Kevin Volland in the area, who clinically put the ball past Akinfeev in the CSKA Moscow goal. Bayer then initially controlled the contest and had another good chance through Chicharito (29’). Small lapses of concentration allowed the home side back into the game, however. A mistake from Charles Aranguiz allowed Alan Dsagojew into a goalscoring position, but his shot went just over the bar (30’).

After the break, it was an even contest between the two sides, with good opportunities scarce. in the 63rd minute, a Calhanoglus free-kick caused Igor Akinfeev a scare in the Moscow goal. However, CSKA increased their efforts against a passive Leverkusen.

Penalty brings CSKA level

Bernd Leno prevented a CSKA equaliser in the 69th minute when Golowin had an effort from saved from a corner. Leverkusen struggled to get out of their own half, however, and conceded an equaliser through a penalty in the 75th minute, with Bibras Natcho converting past Leno.

Following the home side’s goal, the game became a lot more open. Volland hit the post from 15 yards out in the 80th minute, while at the other end, an unmarked Dsagojew shot past Leno’s goal.
