Volland rescues a point for Hoffenheim

1899 Hoffenheim and 1. FC Köln shared the spoils on matchday 28, with the sides playing out a 1-1 draw in Sinsheim. The visitors took the lead through Simon Zoller (69’) but Germany international Kevin Volland netted an injury time equaliser, meaning he has now had a hand in seven of TSG’s last eight Bundesliga goals.

Köln now have 34 points and are 11th in the table, seven clear of the drop zone. Hoffenheim’s late leveller means they have climbed out of the relegation rankings for the first time in 2016. They now have 28 points to their name and are 14th.

The Billy Goats went into the game full of confidence but almost slipped behind after just 13 minutes. Andrej Kramaric burst into the box but his effort was tipped to safety by Timo Horn. Leonardo Bittencourt had a great chance to put the visitors in front shortly before the half-hour mark but his effort lacked conviction. Anthony Modeste almost scored against his former side before the break but Hoffenheim keeper Oliver Baumann stood firm.

Zoller scores for Köln but Volland strikes back

The second period remained even throughout. Hoffenheim’s Kevin Volland missed a presentable opportunity after 62 minutes and his side were left to rue that chance as Köln went in front moments later. Jonas Hector played in Zoller, whose precise effort hit the back of the net.

TSG stepped it up in the closing stages, with Horn being called into action on numerous occasions. However, with the final whistle fast approaching, he was beaten. Kramaric’s shot landed at the feet of Volland and he buried it to rescue a point for Julian Nagelsmann’s side.
