Volland out for the rest of the year

Bayer 04 Leverkusen will have to do without Germany international Kevin Volland until next year after he strained his right thigh. His teammate Admir Mehmedi also picked up a muscle injury (pulled adductor muscle) and will be out for two to three weeks. The forwards both injured themselves on Wednesday in training, with sporting director Rudi Völler lamenting his side’s misfortune: “Two injuries in one day – it’s very annoying and bitter. Kevin won’t be able to play again this year, we’ll have to see with Admir.”

These two players add to Leverkusen’s injury list ahead of their upcoming Champions League tie on Wednesday with AS Monaco. Fortunately for Bayer however, they have already qualified for the next stage of the competition. At the weekend, they host SC Freiburg in the league, with their only remaining home game this year coming on the 18th of December against FC Ingolstadt. Their other two matches are away, first against Schalke 04 (11th December) and on the final matchday before the winter break against 1. FC Köln (21st December).
