Visitors from across the world attend Braun’s 90th birthday

About 120 guests from the world of football and sport, politics and sports politcs visited the 90th birthday party for Honorary DFB President Egidius Braun in the Hennef school of sport. Among the honorary guests were the former Minister for the Interior, Otto Schily, former UEFA President Lennart Johansson, DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach, Honorary DFB President Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder, League President Reinhard Rauball, Honorary Team Captain Franz Beckenbauer, former Germany head coach Berti Vogts and former Germany internationals Wolfgang Overath, Toni Schumacher, Hans-Peter Briegel and Rudi Völler.

Grigori Surkis, the former President of the Ukrainian Football Association also attended the party. Braun succeeded Hermann Neuberger as DFB President in 1992 and stayed in office until 2001. He is praised as the initiator of the DFB’s corporate social responsibility initiatives. His motto “Football is more than a 1-0 scoreline” has become a well-known saying. The DFB foundation that acts as umbrella organisation for the association's social involvement was named after him.

Braun: "Something amazing happened today"

When Egidius Braun arrived at his 90th birthday party with his wife Marianne, the honorary guests from all over the country and across the rest of the world honoured him with minutes of applause. As usual, it was the Kaiser, who found the right words for a cheerful opening. “And we’ll all be back for the 100th birthday,” he said. Braun, who lives in Aachen had tears in his eyes during the party in the Hennef school of sport.

That can be partially credited to a touching speech by his longstanding friend and companion Lennart Johansson who came from Stockholm to be with the Honrary President on his birthday. “I’m grateful for our time together and I’ll never forget how we used to sing together, even though I didn’t know the text and could only contribute a ‘lalala’,” said the former UEFA-President, who delivered his speech in English. Braun was visibly moved when the party came to an end. “Something amazing happened today. I thank you all for coming,” he said.

Niersbach honours Braun: “German football’s social awareness”

Wolfgang Niersbach brought along a cheque over €5000 for Braun’s Mexico foundation. He gave a speech honouring his achievements. “You were the personification of German football’s social awareness. You’ve left your mark, proving that football is more than a 1-0 scoreline.

Merkel thanks Braun: "Supported youth projects"

90 celebrities from politics, sports and the media sent their written birthday wishes to Braun. “I wish you a happy 90th birthday and would like to thank you for your contribution to football,” wrote German Chancellor Angela Merkel. “I particularly remember your willingness to support youth projects in Germany.”

A card from IOC President Thomas Bach read: “Today is another opportunity for you to look back on your life’s work with pride. However, knowing you, you’re probably making plans for the future. That’s what made you so successful and so likeable.” Germany head coach Joachim Löw also sent his wishes. "Dear Egidius Braun, happy 90th birthday. Thank you for everything you’ve done for football, the people and all the children. That’s amazing,“ he wrote.

Especially touching words arrived from France. Daniel Nivel, a French policeman, who was beaten into a coma by German hooligans during the 1998 World Cup and his wife Lorette sent a letter. "What happened to Daniel shocked you immensely. You were always involved in his condition and we’ve always kept in touch. You came to visit us although we didn’t know each other. Our eyes said more than our words when we met for the first time,” were their words.
