The video assistant pilot-phase will begin during the 2017/18 Bundesliga season, starting with the opening match FC Bayern München against Bayer Leverkusen this Friday at 20:30 CEST. A video assistant referee will be used in all 306 Bundesliga matches during the season to help the referee make decisions in the following situations: goals, penalty kick decisions, red card situations and situations where the wrong player is punished.
The introduction of a video assistant referee will make the decision-making process more transparent. If the referee changes his decision after communicating with his video assistant, media partners and television broadcasters will be provided with the necessary replays and time loops, in particular the decisive camera angles, as quickly as possible.
This particularly applies to offside decisions, even if the original decision made by the referee is correct.
The spectators will be made informed of a change in the referee’s decision via an image on the stadium screens. Replays of the incident will not be used on the first two matchdays due to the high complexity of different technical requirement and processes at the various venues.

If the video assistant intervenes, the referee will put one hand on his ear to indicate that he is communicating with the assistant and gameplay will be stopped. The referee will draw an outline of a screen in the air if his decision has been changed by the video assistant or if he must watch the incident again himself on a monitor at the side of the pitch.
The introduction of video assistants in the Bundesliga is part of a worldwide test phase, launched by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) in 2016. The decision whether to implement video assistants in the long-term will be made in early 2018.
