The Video Assist technology which has been used this season in the Bundesliga will also be in action in this summer’s World Cup in Russia. The decision was made at a FIFA council meeting on Friday in Bogota in Columbia. The International Football Association Board (IFAB) made the technology part of the official rules of the game on March 3rd.
President of the DFB, Reinhard Grindel, wrote on Twitter: “Now it’s important that the officials are well trained so that they communicate clearly and the technology is implemented smoothly.” FIFA’s president, Gianni Infantino, assured that would be the case: “This is a decision which will go down in history. We’ve come to this decision having spoken to over 1000 players and based it on the fact that the Video Assist can help the referees ensure games are as fair as they can be.”
“It didn’t sit well with us the idea that a potential refereeing error could have a grave impact on the World Cup,” said Infantino. FIFA also tested “VAR” (Video Assistant Referee) at the 2017 Confed Cup.
