Mainz goalkeeper Jonas Lössl was immediately brought into action when he was forced to save a free-kick from Ricardo Rodriguez in the 4th minute. VfL Wolfsburg came even closer to opening the scoring in the 36th minute but Lössl managed to tip his volley over the crossbar. Towards the end of the first half Mainz regained some control over the game. They had a good chance to take the lead just before the half-time whistle but Yunus Malli couldn’t quite make contact with the ball.

The 25,876 spectators were ready to cheer for the opening goal when Julian Draxler managed to beat Lössl and find himself in front of an open goal but Mainz defender Giulio Donati slid in to clear his shot off the line at the last minute.
