“United by Football” in Berlin: Choreography sends clear message

What a show of unity. Before the highly anticipated clash between the Brazilian and German national teams on Tuesday evening, all of the 74,000 spectators in the Olympiastadion took part in a huge choreography throughout the whole stadium. “United By Football”, the motto for Germany’s UEFA EURO 2024 bid, was clear to read across the stands while the campaign’s logo was projected within the stadium simultaneously. It sent a clear message - Germany stands together behind its bid to host the European Championship! From the national side out on the pitch wearing armbands displaying the logo, to the fans who had been preparing for their big moment for weeks - it was a special moment shared by all.

The impressive motive was first designed and then the materials needed for the display were brought together. “We ordered 74,000 cards in four colours - black, red, gold and white,” said Karsten Darbel, the leader of the team that put together the choreography. Every single seat was then equipped with the corresponding card. It was a project on an unparalleled scale. “The only time we organised something close to this was for the opening game of the 2006 World Cup,” Daebel added.

Lahm: “An unbelievable achievement”

The Choreography team had been in the Olympiastadion since Saturday preparing the huge stadium-wide display. Around two dozen volunteers assembled every single card according to a very strict plan - and with it missed out on experiencing the international against Spain in Düsseldorf on Saturday. “In the end, around 60 to 70 people were involved in making it happen,” said Daebel.

On Tuesday morning, there was an unexpected added motivation for the numerous volunteers. Philipp Lahm, World Cup winner and ambassador for Germany’s EURO bid, was at the Olympiastadion in person to speak to the helpers on hand and thanked them for their part in this unique project. “It’s an unbelievable achievement to pull something like this off and to send our campaign’s underlying message to the whole world. The entire stadium is involved in our application. It’s extremely impressive to see the amount of people working their tails off to make sure that the choreography runs perfectly.”
