Underdogs and defending champions go for the cup

This season, the final of the DFB Women's Cup will take place at the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne for the seventh time. 26,282 spectators are expected for the showpiece match between defending champions VfL Wolfsburg and surprise package SC Sand, who knocked out German champions Bayern München and are in the first cup final in the club's history.

Wolfsburg's previous successes speak for themselves. The Wolves have won the Bundesliga, the Champions League and the DFB Cup twice each, winning the treble in 2013. They are currently second in the Bundesliga and will take on Lyon on 26th May in the Champions League final. Their current squad contains 18 internationals, seven of whom have played for Germany. Manager Ralf Kellermann was the World Women's Manager of the Year in 2014.

Anne van Bonn has cup-final experience

On the other side, SC Sand are an unknown quantity. The team from the south are in their second season in the Allianz Women's Bundesliga and sit in sixth place, but have already impressed in the DFB Cup. In the 2013/14 season, they left several well-known teams in their wake to make the semi-finals. Last year, they made the quarter-finals but lost to Wolfsburg 2-1. Their most experienced player is Anne van Bonn, who celebrated two cup wins in her time with FCR 2001 Duisburg.

Wolfsburg have had the better of the sides' previous Bundesliga meetings, winning three of four games. Sand, however, secured a 1-0 win over Wolfsburg this season and will be looking to go one better and beat the Wolves to claim the cup. Kick-off on 21st May is at 15:00 CEST.
