Under 21 started EC qualification with victory

The German Under 21 National Team got a good start at Northern Ireland for the qualifying campaign for the EC 2009. The team of coach Dieter Eilts beat Northern Ireland 3-0 (0-0). Rouwen Hennings (2) and Mesut Özil scored for the Germans at Lurgan. After the victory the DFB side are placed first in the qualification group together with Israel, which beat Luxembourg 3-0 (2-0).

The game started with both teams playing rather nervous and seeing no chances on neither side. Allthough Germany were a little better, the Northern Irish hat three corners. In the second half coach Dieter Eilts took action and brought Rouwen Hennings from second league side VfL Osnabrück for luckless striker Ashkan Dejagah and newcomer Mesut Özil (Schalke 04) came for midfielder Dennis Aogo.

While playing his debut in the Under-21 German team Ozil managed to speed up the offensive play and helped Hennings along to score the first goal of the match (78th). Özil himself scored the second goal (89.) before Hennings made everything clear by raising the score to 3-0.

Coach Eilts said: "I am satisfied with the result but not with the game. Allthough we played a better second half, the first one was a catastrophe."

In group 9 Germany fight for making it to the play-offs until September 9, 2008. Besides Northern Ireland, Israel, Luxembourg and Moldova are opponents of the Germans. The ten group winners as well as the best four second placed teams qualify for the play-offs, played in a round robin format. The seven play-off winners follow hosts Sweden into the final round.
