Under-17s qualify for European Championships as group winners

Qualification for the Euros had already been secured but Germany’s Under-17s have finished top of their qualifying group thanks to a 2-2 draw with Italy in their final game. The perfect record up to now (two wins and a goal ratio of 6:0) took a hit but Christian Wück’s side fought hard for a deserved draw against a strong Italian side.

In front of 6,500 spectators in Wetzlar, Gökhan Gül gave Germany an early lead in the 14th minute. However, the Bochum man was given his marching orders in the 23rd minute for a professional foul, which resulted in a penalty for Italy. Captain Andres Llamas Acuna made no mistake from the spot to make it 1-1 (24’).

However, Bruno Tedino’s Italy went in front before half time as Simone Lo Faso scored to make it 2-1 in the 31st minute. The DFB-Team, led by captain Felix Passlack, weren’t disheartened in the second half at being a man down and fully deserved their equaliser, which came through Görkem Saglam in the 77th minute.

The draw means Germany finished top of the group on goal difference. The Italians, who also finished on seven points, finished second in the group, which means they have also qualified for the European Championships in Bulgaria from 6th to 22nd May 2015, which will see 16 teams compete in the tournament for the first time.
