UEFA to honour DFB women

Nadine Angerer, Renate Lingor, Silke Rottenberg, Anja Mittag and many other big names in women’s football will come together on the pitch on Thursday – no, really. Ahead of the match (18:00 CET) against England in Duisburg, fans can expect a special moment. All players of the national side who have played more than 100 games for their country will receive an award from UEFA.

The players to have reached this milestone include Anja Mittag (131 games), Annike Krahn (127), Melanie Behringer (112), Kerstin Stegemann (191), Ariane Hingst (174), Sandra Minnert (147), Sandra Smisek (133), Kerstin Garefrekes (130), and Nadine Angerer (146) and Celia Sasic (111), who both retired after the World Cup in Canada last summer.

Angerer and Sasic will be given an official send off ahead of kick off. Both players played their last games for Germany in Canada, and are looking forward to the special day in Duisburg. Celia Sasic: "I am looking forward to seeing everyone again, and to being there in the stadium and feeling the grass under my feet once again."

Head coach Silvia Neid and her assistant Steffi Jones will also be recognised by UEFA. Both have been involved in 111 international games so far in their careers. Team coach Doris Fitschen played 144 games before retiring in 2001. Furthermore, Bettina Wiegmann (154 games), Renate Lingor (149) and Silke Rottenberg (126) will be given awards by UEFA. All three women are still working for DFB today. Bettina Wiegmann is coach of the U15s and assistant coach of the U19 and U20 women. Renate Lingor is team manager of the U19 and U20 women and Silke Rottenberg is goalkeeping coach of all youth DFB teams.
