U21s need four goals against the Faroe Islands to reach top spot

The U21 national side go into their third European qualifier today hoping for another victory. Horst Hrubesch’s side need at least a four-goal win away to the Faroe Islands today in order to knock Austria off top spot in Group 7. "First place is our aim," said the DFB-Team manager ahead of the game in Tórshavn, the capital (18:30 CEST).

Despite two convincing wins against Azerbaijan (3-0) and Finland (4-0), Hrubesch is demanding a better chance conversion rate from his players. In preparation for the game, the 64-year-old therefore had his team spend almost an hour on shooting practice in the final training session. "We need conviction in front of goal. We saw with the senior side recently how difficult you can make it for yourself if you don’t put your chances away," said Hrubesch, who has bad memories regarding the Faroe Islands. In October 2013, the Germany U21s were 2-1 down to the rank outsiders until the 70th minute. They were able to turn the game around eventually however and win 3-2.

Hrubesch doesn’t wish to spend too much time dwelling: "We are the favourites, no doubt. We want to and we will play as such." All the players are fit to play, and Hrubesch may make several changes to the starting line-up to give some new players a bit of game time.

Sané: "The Faroe Islands will sit back even deeper"

"The Faroe Islands will sit back even deeper than Finland did. We have to take the first chance we get and also be careful not to let them hit us on the break," said Leroy Sané. The young Schalke 04 star contributed two goals to the victory against Finland, and the 19-year-old is looking to improve his already impressive goal tally in Tórshavn. His teammate Joshua Kimmich is a lot more confident ahead of the game: "We want the three points, and a put in a good performance on the pitch."

In the back of the minds at the DFB-U21s however, is the key game on the 11th November against Austria. The European neighbours have also started perfectly with nine points and a goal difference of +10. They are considered the closest rivals for the top spot.

Hrubesch, however, is not thinking that far ahead. "We need to take one step at a time," said the 1980 European Champion prior to the departure in Dortmund: "All I want right now are three points against the Faroe Islands."
