U21s lose in Norway

In their third qualification fixture against Norway, the Germany U21s faced their first defeat of the campaign. Head coach Stefan Kuntz lost to hosts Norway 3-1, despite Cedric Teuchert putting the European champions into the lead. The loss ends a streak of 36 European qualification fixtures since August 2010 in which Germany have at least a point.

Teuchert puts Germany into a deserved lead

From the off, Germany dominated proceedings early on in Norway and had a number of chances to open the scoring. Eventually, the deadlock was broken in the 31st minute as Benjamin Henrichs chipped the ball into the area, Felix Platte slid Teuchert through to put Germany ahead. However, after taking the lead, Germany appeared to allow Norway back into the game. Alex Nübel was forced into two great saves to stop Risa and Ödegaard. Eventually, just before the break, Nübel was powerless to stop Thorsby from close range.

Ödegaard and Thorsby tun the game on his head

The second half was a very even affair initially. Chances were being created for both sides but it was Norway who put themselves into the lead as Ödegaard with a beautiful finish. Soon afterwards, Nübel was called into action once again as Henrik Bjordal’s strike from 40 yards almost crept in. However, minutes later, the Schalke goalkeeper was unable to stop Thorsby from finishing in the far corner to make the game 3-1 and end Germany’s run of 16 wins.
