U21s: Heinrichs returns, Ochs and Passlack called up for the first time

After the opening win against Kosovo, the next two qualifiers for the 2019 U21 European Championships due to be hosted in Italy and San Marino are on the agenda for the Germany U21 national team. On Friday 6th October (19:00 CEST), Stefan Kuntz’s side will face Azerbaijan at the Stadion der Freundschaft in Cottbus before travelling to Drammen to face Norway on Tuesday 10th October (19:00 CEST).

Six of the players called up for the two European qualifiers featured in the squad which won the U21 European Championships in the summer - Nadiem Amiri (TSG 1899 Hoffenheim), Waldemar Anton (Hannover 96), Mahmoud Dahoud (Borussia Dortmund), Thilo Kehrer (FC Schalke 04), Levin Öztunali (1. FSV Mainz 05) and Felix Platte (SV Darmstadt 98). Confederations Cup winner Benjamin Heinrichs of Bayer 04 Leverkusen returns to the squad for the first time since March whilst the Hoffenheim duo of Philipp Ochs and Felix Passlack have been given their first chance in the U21s.

Kuntz’s target: Wins against Azerbaijan and in Norway

Stefan Kuntz said: “We are looking forward to the two matches next week and we will go into the games fully focused. We started on our journey to the Euros in 2019 with a win and we want to back that up with three points against both Azerbaijan and Norway. That will all come down to the boys, who haven’t been together as a team for very long, continuing to find their feet and working hard on the way we play in training.”

The 22-man squad will meet in Cottbus on Monday. Then on Thursday 5th October (from 17:30 CEST), some squad members will visit amateur club SV Fichte-Kunersdorf and will take questions from young budding footballers in a mini press conference. Later that evening (from 19:00 CEST), the team will take part in an open training session at the Stadion der Freundschaft in Cottbus.

“The open training session is a welcome opportunity to thank our fans for their whole support throughout the whole year,” Kuntz said. “It’s an open invite to anyone who wants to come down, to get selfies with the players and autographs. We want to get as many fans as possible to come down to support us at the game in Cottbus. After Energie Cottbus’ great start to the season, I’m sure that there’ll be a great atmosphere at the ground for the U21 match too.”
