U21s heading to 2015 European Championship

The Germany Under-21s have secured their place at the 2015 European Championship in the Czech Republic. Horst Hrubesch’s side won the second leg of their play-off against Ukraine in Essen 2-0 thanks to late goals from captain Kevin Volland and Leonardo Bittencourt. The first leg ended in a 3-0 victory for Germany, meaning they progressed thanks to a 5-0 aggregate win.

It also means that the Germany U21s’ hopes of featuring at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro are still alive. Only eight sides will play in the upcoming EUROs in June, with four of them then qualifying for the summer games one year later. A German side hasn’t featured at the Olympic Games since 1988.
