U21s climb into top spot

The Germany U21s maintained their 100% record in their quest to reach the 2017 European Championship in Poland. Horst Hrubesch’s men beat the Faroe Islands 6-0 on Tuesday to leap into top spot.

The DFB Team now have nine points and have scored 13 goals and are yet to concede, meaning they are just ahead of Austria by virtue of having a better goal difference. The two sides face off in Fürth in November. The team who finishes first qualifies for the tournament automatically.

"We want to go first," announced Hrubesch after the game and his side managed that thanks to goals from Max Meyer (8’, 40’), Maximilian Arnold (13’), Niklas Süle (45’+2), Leroy Sané (73’) and Serge Gnabry (75’). Their cause was helped by the red card given to Hakun Edmundsson shortly before the break.

Hrubesch was pleased with his team after the game “because they managed to create chances and score goals despite not having much space. They continued to play their game once gaining a convincing lead. We’re still developing as a team, but the signs are good. It was a fun evening."

Meyer and Arnold get it started

The 581 spectators in the Torsvöllur Stadium were treated to an entertaining game. Meyer opened the scoring after eight minutes from close range and Arnold netted a screamer soon after to double the lead.

Germany sat back somewhat after the early fireworks and Jakup Thomsen (26’) could have got the hosts back into it before Meyer and Süle hit the back of the net to give the DFB Team a 4-0 lead at the break.

Sané and Gnabry completed the rout after the break. Marc Stendera (Eintracht Frankfurt) and Malcolm Cacutalua, who plays for second division outfit VfL Bochum, made their debuts during the game.
