U21 overview: Zimmer the match winner for Kaiserslautern

Germany’s U21 stars are already looking forward to the European Championship. On 27th March Horst Hrubesch’s side face Italy in Paderborn, with the tournament taking place in the Czech Republic between the 17th-30th June. The eligible players will be aiming to put in great performances in the Bundesliga ahead of the tournament, in order to catch the attention of the coaching staff. The ‘U21 Overview’ is a new series on DFB.de: Every Tuesday we will profile some of the eligible players and examine their form at club level.

Zimmer leaves Betzenberg rocking

Second game, second win and a Germany Under-21 international is the match winner once again for 1. FC Kaiserslautern. Jean Zimmer rounded off an impressive counter to give his side the 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute. They were unable to beat opposition keeper Bernhardt again, but Zimmer and his side came away with all three points from the Fritz-Walter-Stadion. A big reason behind the clean sheet was the renewed centre back partnership of Willi Orban and Dominique Heintz, who will play alongside each other in March for Germany against Italy and England.

Korb a derby winner

An emotional Rhein derby between Borussia Mönchengladbach and 1. FC Köln on carnival Saturday was decided in injury time. Gladbach, including Under-21 international Julian Korb, were unable to find a way through Köln’s compact defence and goalkeeper Timo Horn. Korb, who was deployed at right back as part of BMG’s back four, impressed with his runs down the right hand side. But it took until the 92nd minute for the deadlock to be broken, as Granit Xhaka headed home to make it 1-0 and send Borussia-Park delirious.

Hofmann unlucky in comeback

The result against Borussia Dortmund wasn’t what Jonas Hofmann would have been hoping for, as the Under-21 BVB loanee returned to his parent club with Mainz. The 05ers went down 4-2 at the Signal-Iduna Park. A lot nicer was the fact that Hofmann made his return to the Bundesliga after five months out due to injury. Since tearing his ligament in October, Hofmann has been working tirelessly to make a quick return to the Bundesliga and to be able to play in the U21 European Championships in June in the Czech Republic. But he still has some work to do, as Hofmann said honestly after the game in Dortmund: “I was lacking that spark and acceleration,” said Jonas Hofmann, who went on to say: “You could see that I’m not 100% yet.” He played 55 minutes on Friday and will want to build on that in their next home game against Eintracht Frankfurt at the weekend.
