U21 overview: "Can is like a Rolls Royce"

Germany’s U21 stars are already looking forward to the European Championship. On 27th March Horst Hrubesch’s side face Italy in Paderborn, with the tournament taking place in the Czech Republic between the 17th-30th June. The eligible players will be aiming to put in great performances in the Bundesliga ahead of the tournament, in order to catch the attention of the coaching staff. The ‘U21 Overview’ is a new series on DFB.de: Every Tuesday we will profile some of the eligible players and examine their form at club level.

Hofmann and Orban consolidate second place

The promotion race is hotting up in the second-tier and two Germany U21 stars are dreaming of the top-flight. Central defender Willi Orban has taken on more responsibility at 1. FC Kaiserslautern in recent weeks. The 22-year-old is the side’s new captain and guided his side to a 2-0 win away to Eintracht Braunschweig.

Philipp Hofmann was crucial to the win. Having scored his side’s last goal of 2014, he opened the scoring in 2015 in Braunschweig, in front of the watching Horst Hrubesch. “We were more clever than we have been in previous away games,” said Hofmann, who received praise from the supporters and media after the game.

Horn still yet to concede

A solid defence is the basis of good form. U21 goalkeeper Timo Horn has remained unbeatable between the sticks for 1. FC Köln. He has yet to concede in the Bundesliga in 2015, with the most recent clean sheet coming in the goalless draw against Paderborn. Horn has kept nine clean sheets so far this season. Köln have picked up five points so far in 2015 and have solidified their position.

There aren’t many games which rival the Rhine derby or el Clásico, but the Merseyside derby (Between Liverpool and Everton) certainly does. The 224th meeting of the sides took place on Saturday. The game was goalless but Emre Can completed the match and impressed throughout. After the game Brendan Rodgers praised the performance: “Emre was like a Rolls Royce.”
