U20s watch the World Cup opener

Germany’s U20 Women’s team had a special visitor while having dinner on the evening before their World Cup opening match against Venezuela. Ambassador Dr. Anna Elisabeth Prinz, who is in charge of Australia and the Island state of Papua New Guinea came by to say hello. “This World Cup is the biggest event of the entire year here,” said Prinz. “The population is fascinated by what women can achieve and it provides everyone with courage.” DFB Vice President Hannelore Ratzeburg said: “It was nice of her to take the time to visit us and wish us success. I find her statement, that this World Cup is especially important for women here very interesting.”

After the dinner the German team attended the opening game between hosts Papua New Guinea and Brazil. The match was played in the Sir John Guise Stadium, just a short walk from the hotel. The hosts suffered a 9-0 defeat to the South American side. The fans in attendance celebrated every move on the pitch, as well as the goals for Brazil.

The opening ceremony before the game was heavily influenced by the diverse cultures of the country. Lots of native and traditional clothing was on display for the 12,000 spectators, who were treated to giant fireworks to conclude the ceremony.
