U20s open Elite Cup with fixture against Turkey

A special occasion for the U20 national team. After the first two games of the international break, Germany meet Turkey in Ulm tonight for the opening game of the Mercedes Benz Elite Cup. Frank Wormuth’s team kick off at 18:00 CEST tonight.

The U20s have difficult few days ahead. "We are playing against three teams whose mentalities and styles of play are completely different," said the coach, who expecting three difficult games. "Turkey will be an agile team who get stuck in to their opponents." Germany will face the Netherlands and England after the opener against Turkey.

Team spirit, passion and clever play

The key to being successful in the Mercedes-Benz Elite Cup is team spirit, passion and skilful technical ability. The U20s begin their campaign today at 18:00 CEST in the tournament, coming up against Turkey in the Donau stadium in Ulm. The U19s were successful in their opener against USA yesterday, beating them comfortably 8-1. Hardly a bad omen.

Wormuth: "We have a very well balanced team"

"All of our players are on a similar level. All of our substitutes and reserves are capable of playing in the first team, and we could play numerous different formations," said Wormuth, who is aware of the burden of the competition on some of his players. Those who were on duty for their clubs on Sunday will be given a rest. Many of those who played on Saturday, however, will be in the starting eleven tonight.

Despite this, Wormuth still expects the same level of commitment from his players. He operates on a specific philosophy which revolves around moving the ball well like the senior team, and finding solutions while under pressure. "Of course it is sometimes an option to play the long ball, but the principal is to play clever football up front to find a way through."

Good record against Turkey

The good news for the U20s is that they have beaten Turkey in the last two outings, in October 2014 and October 2013. The games were both intense and close. "The Turks play technical and in-your-face football." An interesting game awaits German, but they want to be successful in their first Elite Cup fixture.
