U20s lose in Poland

Germany U20s have missed out on consecutive wins in their second game of the international round-robin tournament against Poland. Despite a convincing performance from Germany’s youngsters in front of 2,000 fans in Wloclawek, the Polish hosts came away victorious 2-1. This defeat follows a 2-0 win for Frank Wormuth’s side in Italy.

“We tore the Poles apart at times in the second half with some class football,” says Wormuth. “I have rarely seen a team play such quality football, but the only shortcoming was that we didn’t take our chances and the actual result.” Looking ahead to the Mercedes Benz Elite Cup and other games in the four-team round robin, Wormuth added, “We will approach the next tasks with excitement because we have only seen positives here. The majority of the team will be with us again in October – I have promised them that.”

Wolfsburg’s Stolze equalises from spot

Wormuth was true to his word after the Italy game and made eight changes to his starting XI, with only Marvin Schulz, Maximilian Wittek and captain Grischa Prömel retaining their places in the side.

The changes were hardly noticeable in the team’s performance, but in the 12th minute Poland went ahead though Rafal Makowski. Germany, however, remained the better and more active team and were rewarded ten minutes later, with Wolfsburg’s Stolze converting a penalty to make it 1-1. Shortly before the break there was another blow when Krzysztof Piatek scored the second goal for the hosts.

Germany tried to force the equaliser in the second half but to no avail despite a commanding performance. That means the result at the end remained an unfortunate defeat for Germany and Poland have now overtaken Germany at the top of the table with six points. Germany’s next games in the competition will again be against Italy and Poland in Osnabrück (12th November) and Münster (16th November) respectively.

Germany last won the international round-robin tournament in 2013/14 with ten points, but last season they trailed in third with only five after one win, two draws and three defeats.

The international round-robin tournament consists of six matches in total for each time (three at home and three away) and runs until the end of the 2015/16 season. Between 7th and 13th October Germany U20s will host England, the Netherlands and Turkey in the Mercedes Benz Elite Cup.
