U20 World Cup draw with Maradona: Germany in pot 1

The draw for the U20 World Cup in South Korea this summer will take place tomorrow morning. The tournament will take place between 20 May and 11 June and Germany will be involved. National coach Guido Streichsbier’s side are in pot 1 alongside the hosts, Portugal, Uruguay, France and the USA.

A DFB delegation, including Streichsbier, is already in South Korea and will be staying in the German Embassy. South Korean football legend Bum-kun Cha is also in attendance. The 63-year-old played 308 games in the Bundesliga between 1978 and 1989, representing Darmstadt 98, Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen.

Maradona: “U20 World Cup highlight for all young players“

The draw will be carried out by former World Cup winner Diego Maradona and former Argentinian International Pablo Aimar. Both men won the u20 World Cup during their careers, Maradona in Japan in 1979 and Aimar in Malaysia in 1997.

“Completing the draw for Korea will be a memorable moment,” said Maradona. “It will remind me of debut and and my first title in 1979. The u20 World Cup is highlight for all young players. Hopefully this year’s tournament will show us the Maradona’s and Aimar’s of the future.”

A sentiment backed up by Aimar: “It’s an honour to be part of this competition. I always look back at these times fondly, particularly the tournament I won in 1997. For me and a lot of my teammates it marked the start of a brilliant football career.”
