U20 World Cup: Brazil through to round of 16, Nigeria and Fiji also win

In Group E, Brazil won thanks to a late penalty from Andreas Pereira in the 85th minute. With the 2-1 victory over Hungary, the Brazilians have now already qualified for the round of 16 at the U20 World Cup in New Zealand. Second-placed Hungary will now face Nigeria in the final group game (Sunday, 07:00 CEST), with the winner guaranteeing their place amongst the last 16 teams.

Hungary took an early lead in the game when Bence Mervo opened the scoring in the eighth minute. But they soon had to deal with Krisztian Tamas’ dismissal for a second yellow card in the 16th minute and had to play the rest of the game with ten men. Brazil’s Pereira set up Danilo’s equaliser in the 50th minute, before he personally ensured his team’s passage through to the knockout stages when he converted the late penalty.

In the first game of the day, Nigeria comfortably beat North Korea 4-0. Manu Garba’s side shone after the break, with Saviour Godwin opening the scoring after 48 minutes before doubling his tally three minutes later. Kingsley Sokari and Isaac Success both scored to round off the perfect performance.

The African side are currently third in the table on three points, level with Hungary. These two teams meet each other in the final group game on Sunday (07:00 CEST). The Brazilians face North Korea, who are yet to win a point, in their quest for top spot.

Fiji victorious over Honduras

Germany’s Group F will also be interesting until the end. Frank Wormuth’s U20 side have already qualified for the round of 16 at this World Cup thanks to a 3-0 win against Uzbekistan, but the group is still in the balance.

In the group’s other game, Fiji were victorious over Honduras to keep their hopes of qualification alive. The two teams currently occupy third and second place respectively with three points each. After two defeats from two Uzbekistan sit bottom of the group with only a slim chance of progressing to the next round.

In the third and final round of group fixtures, the DFB-Team meet Honduras on Sunday at 04:00 CEST. At the same time, Fiji play against Uzbekistan for their chance to qualify to the round of 16. Theoretically, all three teams can still top the group with a win.
